If you’ve ever watched an agility trial and marveled at how these dogs love it you are ready to start your dog yourself. There are all sorts of small safe equipment that you can use at home. The equipment is easily assembled and doesn’t take up a lot of room but the enjoyment you and your dog can get out of it is immense.
I have Akitas, Pit Bulls and an Aust. Cattle Dog, all but the Akitas are pretty active. Even the Akitas like to play with the jumps.. The ACD & Pits love all the stuff.
Jumps: Condition your dog a bit before you start jumping them. Start with a short time in mind and go slowly. Have the jump bar on the lowest pegs to get your dog used to jumping over things.
Weave Poles: This takes a while to have the dog understand you want them to go BETWEEN the poles and not AROUND them, but it’s well worth your effort.. They have guide wires to help you get your point across without to much frustration..
Tunnels: This is my favorite. You start with the tunnel all scrunched up so it’s short. As the dog becomes familiar with the game you make it longer.. The dogs are a hoot trying to beat you to the other end..
Chute: This is a collapsed tunnel. The dog has to navigate without seeing the other end..
These fun items can be added to any dogs training schedule. They are a lot of fun for both you and your furry companion… and trust me, they tire out the terriers…
